WHAT IS THE PACE?

The National Association of Legal Assistants was established in 1970. The CP Certified Paralegal and CLA Certified Legal Assistant Examinations were established by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) in 1976. According to the NALA website, as of November 2013, there are over 17,711 Certified Paralegals and over 3,000 Advanced Certified Paralegals in the United States.

The Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE) is a high-level certification for experienced paralegals seeking certification. The test requires advanced application of general knowledge, paralegal experience and critical analysis. The PACE credential is a strong demonstration of advanced competency and paralegal expertise and helps candidates qualify as registered paralegals and further their legal careers.

HOW IS THE pace SCORED?

The PACE scale ranges from 300 – 700 points and the passing score is 550 points. The number of questions answered correctly to may vary depending on the exam form and the assigned point value. Candidates are not penalized based on the exam form’s difficulty.

HOW IS THE pace ADMINISTERED?

The exam is a computer-based test offered on a continuous basis by Prometric. It is a multiple-choice test consisting of 200 questions which you will have 4 hours to complete. You will receive your score immediately upon finishing the test and Prometric will automatically provide the NFPA with your results.

On the day of the test, you should arrive with two forms of identification at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled testing time.
